Did you know that Thursday the 4th of August is Cycle to Work Day? Why not give it a try, get involved and let those around you know. Perhaps check out your employer’s cycle to work scheme?
There are many benefits to cycling to work. Firstly, it’s cheaper! It could be an effective way of cutting back on costs during the current cost of living crisis, a time where every penny really does count.
Now let’s explore the numerous health benefits of physical activity.
Regular physical activity can:
- Lower the risk of a range of medical conditions (coronary heart disease, stroke, various cancers and type 2 diabetes)
- Have a positive effect on your mental health and wellbeing by increasing mental alertness, energy and positive moods. It can also increase self-esteem, and reduce stress and anxiety
- Increase muscle strength and tone- depending on the type of exercise you do
- Improve your balance
- Help maintain a healthy weight
- Improve cognitive function
Perhaps your workplace is quite far, or you have a lot to carry. Don’t worry, you don’t need to miss out. How about a 10 minute cycle? And if cycling isn’t for you, turn your commute or school run into a walk: explore your options, however you choose to do it, aim to get that extra bit of physical activity and be part of the larger community sharing their efforts on the day.
