Humber NHS Foundation Trust’s award winning health trainer team is rolling out the Smoking Cessation Service in East Yorkshire including nicotine replacement (NRT)alongside the proven support, advice and motivation that has already helped hundreds of people in the East Riding to change their lives for the better by making healthier lifestyle choices.
Smokers, including young people from the age of 12, are now able to get help to quit at drop-in sessions, one-to-one appointments and evening and weekend clinics at a wide variety of venues including the popular Health Trainer shops in the heart of Bridlington and Goole.
The health trainers will also be working closely with schools and colleges in the East Riding to support young people who smoke and want to give up and adopt a healthier lifestyle.
Natalie Belt, Health Trainer Manager for Humber NHS Foundation Trust, explained the new service would make getting the right help to stop smoking in the East Riding easier than ever before.
“Stopping smoking will change your life for the better,” said Natalie. “You’re four times more likely to quit with NHS support and the new service will make this support more accessible than ever with longer clinic opening hours, drop-in sessions on evenings and weekends in the larger towns and clinics in rural parts of the East Riding, including throughout Holderness.
“All Stop Smoking patients will have their own dedicated health trainer to support them to stop smoking long beyond the quit as well as make other lifestyle changes if they wish such as losing weight, getting more active or finding ways to cope with everyday stress.”,
The local model for Stop Smoking changed on April 1st 2015 with the Trust being awarded the Tier 2 (community based) contract. TheTier 3 (services for people in hospital/inpatient units) has also been awarded to the NHS healhtrainer service.
Dr Tim Allison, East Riding’s director of public health, said: “The new service offers a great opportunity to build on past successes and to give East Riding residents wide opportunities to quit smoking and improve their health.”
Dr Gina Palumbo, Clinical Chair, East Riding Clinical Commissioning Group commented: “The Clinical Commissioning Group is committed to supporting healthy independent living. We want to empower patients to manage their own health, make positive lifestyle choices and take responsibility for their personal wellbeing. The new Tier 2 community based stop smoking service, commissioned by our Public Health colleagues, is just one of many initiatives being implemented to achieve this ambition.”
Patients will receive an eight week, weekly programme of free NRT support alongside behaviour change support, advice and motivation in line with NICE recommendations.
This is a community-based service that the Trust will deliver alongside our successful health trainer service that is already making an impact locally, supporting people to make positive lifestyle changes including smoking, weight loss, physical activity, emotional wellbeing and alcohol misuse.
The health trainer team is set to grow in the next few weeks as the Trust has created three new full time health trainer roles with a focus on helping people to stop smoking.
A list of clinics will be available soon but in the short term, the service is already taking bookings via our 0800 9177752 central referral line or by emailing
