Monday 5th February 2018

Throughout the month of February, I will be writing a series of updates about my role as a Health Trainer. This will allow me to highlight some of the amazing successes that our clients have experienced. Everybody is different and their respective journeys are unique to them. As members of staff we are proud to play a part in peoples positive lifestyle changes.

This morning I received a fantastic phone call off a client who wished to update me on his progress with regards to stopping smoking. The client recently completed the 8 week referral and is extremely proud that he has maintained his quit and wished to discuss this achievement with me. A great way to start the day!

I then had an appointment with a lady who has recently found out she is diabetic, which can be daunting at first. We spent time talking about the mechanisms underpinning diabetes and then spoke about how our lifestyle can have a positive effect on this. We now have an exciting plan in place to help the client achieve her goals. It is important to get to know clients, as then we can create a plan together which suits their interests, lifestyle and health complications.

I then saw a client who is looking to gradually reduce their alcohol consumption. Last session, we created a structure which the client ultimately adhered to – a fantastic achievement! We now are discussing the client’s wishes for the future.

In the afternoon I delivered an NHS Health Check for a client who previously had one with the service 5 years ago. This check provides the opportunity for clients to ask questions about their results. More importantly, we ensure they have lots of resources and information for them to take home and implement in their lives.

The service has been delivering the NHS Health Check for many years now. We are now seeing clients come back to the service for their second health check, as 5 years has passed since their first. The health check is a succinct, informative session, which is always well received by clients. If you are aged between 40-74 without a pre-existing condition, you may be eligible for the check. The health check is designed to spot early signs of stroke, kidney disease, heart disease, type 2 diabetes or dementia. Call 0800 917752 to book an appointment.

As a health trainer, I also see clients for emotional wellbeing. Client may be suffering from low level anxiety and stress and therefore could find it beneficial talking to someone. Our lifestyles can play a huge part in our overall wellbeing, and there are lots of social networks available across the East Riding that a health trainer can signpost you to. We may also discuss self-help stress management techniques. I see a few clients who are experiencing loneliness. By having regular contact with a health trainer, this can provide a structure to increase social interaction.

Today I had an appointment which was attended by two friends together. Some people prefer to embark on their weight loss journey with friends, as they can push each other and provide support during difficult times. As a service we are happy to do this, with regards to any positive lifestyle change.
